7 Things South Africans will understand
17:13
Whether you're a girl from South Africa or not, in today's post you'll get the low down on what girls living in South Africa experience.
1. Online delivery stores.
Picture this: You're looking for a Matric dance (Prom) dress on the Internet when you find the most amazing dress, it matches your figure, skin tone and a pair of heels you already own. All you have to do now is buy it. PROBLEM! You can't because the website doesn't deliver to South Africa! Now you have to screenshot the picture and somehow get someone to make a dress just like that. It just becomes a huge effort when if you were living somewhere else, you could have the dress on your doorstep within a few working days.
Although there are a huge amount of website who do sell to South Africa, it just gets annoying how you find something perfect but then you can't have it. I don't know, maybe it's a sign that you shouldn't buy the item? I suppose if we did have the unlimited access to buying clothes and food from all over the world, we would probably pretty much be in debt am I right ladies? ;)
2. Party Time
In South Africa we have a vast collection of different people and when it comes to partying we use this to our advantage, I'll give you an example: When I have a party/braai (barbecue) we really go all out. We have Biltong and Boerwors and Indian Curry and French loaves and beer etc etc. There is never a party/braai where you won't have a dull moment because no matter who it is we always have fun. There is often that one extremely loud person who rubs off on us all, making us roar with laughter and the most simplest thing ever. It's not because we're drunk either. (I'm underaged anyway)
Also if you aren't hosting a party then you have no worry because if you feel like going to a party at any point of the day you can just search Facebook or Google and boom you'll have an event to go to.
There is always events happening especially during the weekends for whatever type of partying you prefer whether it be drinking (remember don't drink and drive) or braaing or anything, there'll be one for you. If there isn't an event for some unknown reason there are always clubs to go to and if your not the type to want to drink or are underaged (like me for example) then you can always go to something like Party in the Park which is simply that - a party in the park. Just with the exception that they have all ages there. It more aimed towards the high school students.
Although there are some situations which can be very dangerous like when being at a club alone which I why I recommend going with at least 2 other friends. That way if 2 of you want to get drunk then the other can be sober to drive them home. These roles can be switched each time you decide to go out.
But I can't stress this enough that you don't have to get drunk to have fun. For me, partying is just hanging with my friends at home with the music loud while we laugh and cook our food together. There's no alcohol and no hangover and no vomit. Although if you prefer to get drunk then I won't judge you on that because it's you're choice however I will tell you to be safe and make sure you have a ride home.
3. Food, Glorious Food
Ok so leading on from the last point, the food we make is incredible! If you go to a market you'll find at least 3 different cultures of food. There will be curries, biltong, candy floss, wors rolls, pancakes and a variety of other foods.
4. Sunsets
Has anyone seen The Lion King? In the opening scene, I think it is, there is an absolutely gorgeous sunset. True to the movie, the sunset/sunrises are just like that. If I didn't have school then I would stay awake all night to watch both the sunset and sunrise. They are absolutely stunning and I love them so much :)
5. Rumors
The amount of times I see someone saying that the whole of Africa is starving is insane. Although there are many people in poverty in Africa, it doesn't mean everyone is. Yes, Africa could use some help in cases of poverty but it's not the entire country. Rumors like this can be seen anywhere on the internet anytime of any day. Some are completely ridiculous too for example - We own lions in our back garden. I wish we did but unfortunately that would be very dangerous, and it isn't true.
6. Movie dates
A movie just released in America! Yeah that's great! Why don't we go see it this weekend? Oh yeah right, no we can't because we have to wait about 2 months for it to be released here! For some reason the movies only come out here ages after everyone in the world has already seen it. Oh and let's not forget the spoilers that appear on tumblr and twitter from those who have seen the movie before us! Fortunately this problem is reducing so we only wait a little while but it only take a few seconds to make a meme of the climax of the movie so...
7. Humid
Where I live, it gets so humid that even the walls sweat. Yes 'Sweat.' You can run your hand down the wall in summer and your hand will be wet. Fortunately I recently ( actually not that recently. More like 3 years ago) I moved to a less humid area which is incredible because it's a lot cooler and a bit like the UK weather minus that much rain.
That's all I have that South Africans will know for now so I hoped you enjoyed learning a little bit more about the life of a South African or if you, too, are South African then I hope you could relate. If you could leave a comment on where you are from that would be amazing! :)
Love you all
